Introduction
Four US citizens were kidnapped in Mexico on March 6th. Security in Matamoros has been deteriorating for years, but this abduction marks a new low for the city. The victims were taken when they entered the city of Matamoros, across the US border with Brownsville, Texas. The purpose of the abduction is still unclear but there have been rumors about mistaken identity. While it is likely that these victims are being held for ransom, it isn't clear who was behind the kidnapping or whether some other motive was at play. In recent years Americans have been increasingly traveling to Mexico for cosmetic surgery procedures such as breast augmentation or liposuction due to increasing costs in the United States
Warnings From State Department
The purpose of the abduction is still unclear but there have been rumors about human trafficking rings operating across the US/Mexico border for years. The State Department has issued warnings about traveling to Mexico, advising Americans to avoid travel to certain areas of the country. It also advises that Americans should avoid traveling to the border area of Matamoros due to high crime rates and gang activity in parts of Tamaulipas state bordering Texas and Nuevo Leon states bordering Coahuila state.
The State Department warns that criminals may target U.S citizens in public places such as banks, ATMs or on public transportation because they tend not to travel in groups or carry weapons when they leave their homes or hotels."

While these victims could have been held for ransom, it isn't clear who was behind the kidnapping or whether some other motive was at play. If a ransom is the goal, then financial gain is likely to be a motivation. If human trafficking is involved (for example, if the kidnappers intend to sell them into sexual slavery), then sexual gratification would be their primary objective. A political group might target US citizens as symbolic gestures against US foreign policy; if this were the case, ideology would be their main motivator.
Finally, if revenge was being sought out by someone close to one of these individuals (or even an unrelated third party), personal feelings could easily have been what drove them into committing such an act of violence in order to exact revenge on those they feel wronged them. First, by hurting loved ones. Later, possibly strangers, after things had settled down enough so as not to raise suspicion among law enforcement agencies investigating such cases where there may be no obvious connections between victimization events occurring simultaneously but separated geographically over long distances from each other geographically speaking i.,e., across continents).

In recent years, Americans have been increasingly traveling to Mexico for cosmetic surgery procedures such as breast augmentation or liposuction due to increasing costs in the United States. However, this trend may be dangerous for those who are unaware of the risks associated with traveling abroad for medical care. This begs the question, "Is a discounted non-medical and /or oftentimes elective procedure really worth the cost?"
Many US citizens turn to Mexico as an affordable alternative when seeking out plastic surgery procedures that they cannot afford at home and do not qualify for government coverage under Obamacare. While some patients have been able to find reputable doctors and facilities in Mexico, others have not been so lucky. In fact, there were more than 600 cases of patient deaths related directly or indirectly with medical tourism between 2010-2014 according to research published by JAMA International Medicine earlier this year! These statistics are likely to increase as people seek more affordable cosmetic procedures.
There are many dangers involved in traveling to Mexico and cosmetic surgery patients should be extremely careful when considering going abroad
There are many dangers involved in traveling to Mexico and cosmetic surgery patients should be extremely careful when considering going abroad. The risk of being abducted is high, as well as the risk of being involved in a car accident or robbery/kidnapping if you are not careful. You also run the risk of contracting communicable diseases from local water sources, food and medical facilities that may not be up-to-date with modern standards of care.
A Sad and Tragic Outcome
In this particular case of abduction, as with other cases of kidnapping in Mexico, the outcome has been tragic. Two of the individuals (Zindell Brown and Shaeed Woodward) that were abducted were killed. Their remains will be examined by Mexican officials before being released to the US government. The surviving two members (Latavia Washington McGee, a mother of six, and Eric Williams) of this group are now in Texas obtaining medical treatment.
Conclusion
The US government has issued a warning to citizens about traveling to Mexico, advising them to exercise caution when considering going abroad for cosmetic surgery procedures. The dangers involved in traveling abroad are well known but many people are still willing to take the risk because of the lower costs associated with going abroad for these procedures compared with getting them done at home.
